Teresa Ciepły was the most awarded athlete-woman ever living in Bydgoszcz. She came to our city from Brodnia where she was born on the 19th of October 1937. At the best time of her career, in the years 1960-1964, she won many medals including a gold medal for the 4 x 100 meters relay and a silver medal for the 80 meters hurdles at Tokyo Olympic Games as well as a bronze medal for the 4 x 100 meters relay at the Olympic Games in Rome. In Belgrad, at Europe Championship in Athletics she won two gold medals, one for the 80 meters hurdles and the other one for the 4 x 100 meters relay as well as a bronze medal for the 100 meters run.

Poland’s wonder-team relay runners: Irena Szewińska-Kirszensztain, Halina Richter- Górecka-Herrmann, Ewa Kłobukowska and Teresa Ciepły not only won gold medals at Olympic Games in Tokyo but also established world record in 4 x 100 meters hurdles.
Bydgoszcz Honorary Citizen
Bydgoszcz citizens appreciated Teresa Ciepły’s contribution to Poland’s sport development and unquestionable promotion of Bydgoszcz Sports Club ‘Zawisza’. In recognition of her achievements City Council awarded her a title of Honorary Citizen in 1997. And then, on the 17th of October 2007 a Complex of Schools nr 15 in Bydgoszcz was, post mortem, named after Teresa Ciepły. She died on the 8th of March 2006 in our city.
